The Devil Makes Three formed in Santa Cruz, California, around guitarist and singer Pete Bernhard, Cooper McBean on guitar and banjo, and Lucia Turino on upright bass. The trio works without a drummer, building rhythm out of strummed guitar, banjo and bass, and draws on old-time string band music, ragtime, blues and country while writing with the bluntness and speed of punk. Their songs tend toward drinking, gambling, sin and mortality, delivered with a dark comic streak. The band has recorded both original material and traditional songs, and built much of its following through steady touring.
