Nana Grizol
Elephant 6-adjacent Athens folk-punk — horn-flecked, big-hearted anthems of queer joy and radical tenderness, community sung into being.
Nana Grizol formed in Athens, Georgia, around songwriter Theo Hilton, who also plays in the folk-punk band Defiance, Ohio. The band records for Orange Twin Records and has drawn its rotating lineup from the city's Elephant 6 circle, including Laura Carter of Elf Power and Neutral Milk Hotel and Robbie Cucchiaro of the Music Tapes and Neutral Milk Hotel.
Its records pair loose, sometimes ragged indie-rock arrangements with horns and clarinet, giving the songs a homemade, marching-band warmth. Bassist and vocalist Madeline Adams, guitarist Jared Gandy and drummer Matte Cathcart round out the current lineup, alongside pianist Patrick Jennings.
Hilton's lyrics are conversational and openly political, returning to friendship, queerness, mutual aid and the small towns and shared houses where those things get worked out.
The band's discography stretches from the 2008 debut Love It Love It through Ruth in 2010, Ursa Minor in 2017 and South Somewhere Else in 2020, with a compilation of early recordings, Theo Zumm, appearing in 2019 and a second EP, Dancing Dogs, closing out 2022.
