Tim Barry is a songwriter from Richmond, Virginia, best known first as the vocalist of the hardcore punk band Avail, who were a fixture of the 1990s and early 2000s punk scene. After Avail wound down, Barry began performing solo with an acoustic guitar, writing narrative songs about work, travel, family and life in and around Richmond.

His solo material sits closer to country and folk than to punk, though the delivery is unpolished and direct in a way that carries over from his earlier work. Freight-hopping and the rail yards recur as subject matter, and he has continued releasing albums and touring as a solo act for well over a decade.
