Live-band rap steeped in Toni Morrison — dense, literary writing over horns and strings, jazz-rap with a scholar's heart and a poet's ear.

McKinley Dixon was born in 1995 in Annapolis, Maryland, and came up in Richmond, Virginia, where he studied animation at Virginia Commonwealth University. He released two albums while still finding his footing, Who Taught You to Hate Yourself? in 2016 and The Importance of Self Belief soon after, before settling into the live-band sound that would define his later records.

His records are built with live musicians, horns, strings, drums and keys arranged in a jazz idiom rather than sample-based production, giving the work a shifting, through-composed quality closer to a small ensemble than a conventional rap album. His 2021 album, For My Mama and Anyone Who Look Like Her, drew comparisons to marching-band arrangements and spoken word as much as to rap, and brought him wider critical attention.

His writing is dense and narrative-driven, dealing with grief, Black masculinity, memory and community, and he has spoken openly about the influence of Toni Morrison on how he structures a verse. His 2023 album, Beloved! Paradise! Jazz!?, takes its title from a phrase of Morrison's and was released through City Slang, praised for its literary reach.

Dixon guested on Soul Glo's "Spiritual Level of Gang Shit" in 2022. His fifth album, Magic, Alive!, followed in 2025 on City Slang, led by the single "Sugar Water" featuring Quelle Chris and Anjimile.
