Teenage underground lightning rod — blown-out, deliberately abrasive rage rap with a following that materialised almost entirely online.
Nettspend is the stage name of Gunner Shepardson, born March 18, 2007, in Richmond, Virginia, to a father who worked as a country singer. He started rapping in fifth grade, left school in ninth grade during the COVID-19 lockdowns, and began posting music to SoundCloud in December 2022.
His song "Drankdrankdrank" went viral on Twitter in late 2023 after rapper Zuro connected him with New York rapper Xaviersobased, pulling him toward a wider audience. Around the same time, "Shine N Peace" was named among the year's best songs by The Fader and The New York Times.
In 2024 he appeared on producer Evilgiane's track "40" alongside Xaviersobased, which was named a best song of the year by The New York Times and Pitchfork, and released "That One Song," built on a sample of Deftones' "Entombed," before pulling most of his catalogue from streaming services.
He put out his debut mixtape, Bad Ass F*cking Kid, in December 2024, followed by a promotional tour that brought out PinkPantheress in Los Angeles, and made runway appearances for Miu Miu and Gucci during Paris and Milan fashion weeks.
His debut studio album, Early Life Crisis, arrived in March 2026 after a long delay. The music sits close to the rage and digicore strands of internet rap, built on distorted, heavily compressed production and short, repetitive vocal hooks delivered in a flat, off-hand tone, with sets that stay brief and high-energy for crowds who know the material as much from short-form video as from streaming.
