Fiddle-led folk punk with a devoted following and a strong line in righteous anger — Levellers-lineage anthems built for muddy-boot dancing.

Ferocious Dog formed in Warsop, Nottinghamshire, and built their following the slow way, through relentless gigging rather than radio. The core of the sound is fiddle and mandolin threaded through a punk rhythm section, with singer Ken Bonsall delivering lyrics that lean openly political, on mining communities, austerity, war and its aftermath, and the treatment of veterans.

Some of the songs draw on the death of Ken Bonsall's son Lee, who served in Afghanistan from eighteen and took his own life in 2012 at twenty-four after struggling with post-traumatic stress; he is remembered in "The Glass, Lee's Tune" and "A Verse for Lee", and his story fed into ongoing fundraising work and a BBC documentary, Broken by Battle.

Their first album came out on Weird Sounds in 2013 after years in the making and picked up notice from both folk and metal press. A second, From Without, followed in 2015, funded by fans pre-ordering the record and produced by Matt Terry, preceded by the singles "Ruby Bridges" and "Slow Motion Suicide".

Touring behind that album with a new lineup, including guitarist Leslie Carter and drummer Scott Walters, they sold out Nottingham's Rock City, the first independent act to do so in the venue's 35-year history, asking fans to bring food-bank donations to the gig. They have toured in support of New Model Army, The Levellers and The Wonder Stuff, and announced a farewell tour for 2026.

Live, the balance tips toward the celebratory: long sets, jigs that accelerate into something closer to hardcore, and a crowd that treats the songs as communal property. Their audience is known as the Hell Hounds, and the band's reputation rests largely on that relationship rather than on chart presence.
