The Front Bottoms began in New Jersey as a duo of singer-guitarist Brian Sella and drummer Mathew Uychich, and their early recordings established the template: acoustic-leaning arrangements played with punk energy, and lyrics delivered in a talky, half-shouted voice full of specific, awkward detail.

The band's self-titled album drew a large following through word of mouth, and subsequent releases filled out the sound with keyboards, horns and a fuller band lineup. Their appeal rests largely on Sella's writing, which trades in blunt admissions and odd images rather than polish, and on audiences who tend to know every word.
