Jenny Lewis's early-2000s indie band — sharp, sardonic songwriting that a whole generation grew up inside, 'Portions for Foxes' still perfect.

Rilo Kiley formed in Los Angeles in the late 1990s around Jenny Lewis and Blake Sennett, both former child actors, with Pierre de Reeder on bass. Their records moved from the sparser, country-inflected indie rock of Take Offs and Landings and The Execution of All Things toward the fuller, more pop-oriented More Adventurous and Under the Blacklight. Lewis's writing paired conversational, often unsparing lyrics about relationships and self-deception with bright melodies, and "Portions for Foxes" became the band's best-known song. The group was closely associated with the Saddle Creek and Omaha indie scene of the era before moving to a major label. They stopped working together in the late 2000s, with Lewis and Sennett both pursuing other projects.
