Young Chicago trio channeling '80s–'90s indie — deadpan harmonies over jangling guitar pop, Sonic Youth homework turned into something their own.
Horsegirl is a trio from Chicago made up of Penelope Lowenstein, Nora Cheng and Gigi Reece, who began playing together as teenagers in 2019. Their music draws openly on American and British indie rock of the 1980s and 1990s, with jangling and distorted guitars, flat unison vocals and a loose, noisy edge that recalls labels like Flying Nun and Sonic Youth's quieter moments.
The band signed to Matador and released Versions of Modern Performance, recorded with John Agnello, followed by Phonetics On and On, produced by Cate Le Bon, which stripped the arrangements back further.
