Alabama Shakes
Brittany Howard's voice is the whole argument — southern soul-rock that sounds like it was recorded in a room too small for it.
Alabama Shakes formed in Athens, Alabama, around 2009, with Brittany Howard on vocals and guitar alongside Zac Cockrell, Heath Fogg and Steve Johnson. Their first album, Boys & Girls, drew on southern soul, blues and garage-inflected rock, and its raw production and Howard's voice were the focus of much of the attention it received.
The follow-up, Sound & Color, pushed further into psychedelia and studio experimentation while keeping the band's rhythm-section-first approach. Howard has since released solo work, and the group's records remain among the more widely heard American rock albums of the 2010s.
