My Morning Jacket formed in Louisville, Kentucky in 1998 around singer, guitarist and songwriter Jim James. Their early records were marked by heavy reverb on James's high, keening voice and a mix of country and rock influences; later albums widened into psychedelia, soul and studio experimentation while keeping the guitar interplay at the centre.
The band built much of its reputation on stage, playing long, loose sets that stretch songs well past their recorded length, which earned them a following in the jam circuit alongside an indie rock audience.
