Perth psych mayhem — riffs like a waterslide through a lava lamp, prolific and twice as loud live.

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets formed in Perth in 2014, when English-born guitarist and singer Jack McEwan began playing with guitarist Luke Parish, bassist Luke Reynolds and drummer Danny Caddy in an old horse barn in the suburb of Leederville. The project grew out of a university assignment McEwan was working on at the time before turning into a full band making music for its own local community.

McEwan, born in 1993, grew up in England and moved to Australia with his family at thirteen; he writes most of the band's material and also designs its artwork, drawing on a graphic design degree. Guitarist Luke Parish has named Pink Floyd's David Gilmour as the biggest influence on his playing.

Fronted by McEwan, the group builds songs around fuzzed, fast-moving guitar riffs, shifting time signatures and dense layers of effects, a sound the band has described as "an energetic mess of colour and tone" and one often compared to fellow Australian acts King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard and Tame Impala.

The band has released albums at a steady pace since its debut, running its own label, What Reality? Records, founded in 2017 partly to reissue its early High Visceral recordings. Membership has shifted over the years: keyboardist and guitarist Chris Young joined in 2019, and the bass chair has since passed from Luke Reynolds to Wayan Biliondana and then to Jamie Reynolds.

The band has toured widely outside Australia, particularly in the UK and Europe, where their live shows run considerably louder and more abrasive than the recordings. At home they have toured behind singles such as "Social Candy" and "Mundungus" and albums including And Now for the Whatchamacallit, released in 2019.
