Zamrock originators, reactivated decades on — fuzz guitar and Zambian psych that predates most of its imitators, history alive and grooving.
W.I.T.C.H. — an acronym for We Intend To Cause Havoc — formed in Zambia in the early 1970s and became the best-known band of the Zamrock movement, which fused fuzz-heavy psychedelic rock and garage influences with Zambian rhythms and vocal styles. Fronted by singer Emmanuel 'Jagari' Chanda, the group recorded a run of albums through the 1970s before the scene faded amid economic decline and the AIDS epidemic, which claimed several Zamrock musicians.
Their catalogue was reissued internationally decades later, which led to renewed interest and a reactivated touring lineup built around Chanda alongside younger players, performing the old material and, more recently, new recordings.
