Belarusian post-punk sung in Russian — drum machines, cold synths, and an unexpected second life online, Soviet-bloc gloom turned viral phenomenon.

Molchat Doma formed in Minsk in 2017, with vocalist Egor Shkutko joined by Roman Komogortsev on guitar, synthesizer and drum machine, and Pavel Kozlov on bass and synthesizer. The band self-released its debut album, S krysh nashikh domov, the same year, and it was later reissued by the German label Detriti Records.

The trio sing in Russian over drum machines, cold synthesizers and reverbed bass, drawing on coldwave, minimal wave and early gothic rock. Shkutko's low, flat vocal delivery sits against stark, repetitive arrangements, an austerity the band has kept deliberate rather than accidental.

A second album, Etazhi, followed in 2018 through Detriti Records. Both records spread through unofficial YouTube uploads before reaching wide notice; by 2019 Etazhi alone had drawn roughly two million listens that way. The band found sold-out audiences across Europe well before they were able to play at home in Belarus.

In January 2020 the group signed to the American label Sacred Bones Records, who reissued its first two albums in North America. That year the track 'Sudno (Boris Ryzhy)' spread widely on TikTok, reaching No. 2 on Spotify's global Viral 50 chart and pulling the band's post-Soviet sound to an international audience far beyond where it started.

A third album, Monument, arrived in November 2020, followed by Belaya Polosa in September 2024. Molchat Doma has since toured Europe and North America extensively, carrying the same austere, Russian-language sound to audiences well outside the post-Soviet underground where it began.
