De La Soul formed in Amityville, Long Island, and released their debut in 1989 with producer Prince Paul, whose dense, playful sampling shaped the group's early sound. Posdnuos, Trugoy the Dove and Maseo built a style that ran counter to the prevailing hardness of late-1980s rap, favouring wordplay, humour and unexpected source material.
The group were founding members of the Native Tongues collective alongside A Tribe Called Quest and the Jungle Brothers. Their catalogue was absent from streaming services for years owing to sample clearance issues before arriving digitally in 2023. Trugoy died in February 2023.
