The Flaming Lips formed in Oklahoma City in 1983 with Wayne Coyne as the constant member, joined for most of the band's history by multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd and bassist Michael Ivins. They began as a noisy psychedelic punk band and gradually moved toward more elaborate studio work, aided by producer Dave Fridmann. A novelty hit in the early 1990s brought them briefly onto radio, but their wider reputation rests on later albums built from orchestral pop, electronics and Coyne's frail, high vocals, often circling themes of death, love and the cosmos. Their concerts are known for confetti, balloons, costumes and video projection, and the band has also pursued unusual formats, including an album written to be played on four stereos at once.
