Tantric
Louisville post-grunge veterans on home ground — 'Breakdown'-era radio rock played for the crowd that grew up on it.
Tantric formed in Louisville, Kentucky in 1998, built around vocalist Hugo Ferreira and former members of Days of the New. Guitarist Todd Whitener, bassist Jesse Vest and drummer Matt Taul had just left that band when they contacted Ferreira, a Massachusetts native then singing in the band Merge; they had toured together previously and admired his baritone voice. The four met to rehearse in Nashville in early 1999.
The new group first called itself C-14 before settling on Tantric, and local radio contacts in Louisville gave it early exposure. Maverick Records signed the band in 2000, and its self-titled debut was recorded in Nashville with producer Toby Wright, arriving in February 2001.
Their self-titled debut arrived at the height of American post-grunge radio and produced 'Breakdown' and 'Astounded,' the two songs most closely associated with the band, alongside the single 'Mourning.' The album reached number 71 on the Billboard 200, was certified gold within the year, and had sold over 600,000 copies by mid-2002. Tantric toured behind it with 3 Doors Down, Lifehouse, Kid Rock and Creed.
A second album, After We Go, followed in 2004, again produced by Toby Wright and led by the single 'Hey Now,' with 'The Chain' and the title track also released as singles. It debuted at number 56 on the Billboard 200 and sold over 200,000 copies in its first year, short of the debut's gold certification.
The lineup has changed extensively over the years, with Ferreira the sole constant, and the group has continued to record and tour well past the era that first made it visible; an eighth studio album, The Sum of All Things, appeared in 2021 on Cleopatra Records. The sound has stayed broadly consistent: mid-tempo hard rock with heavy guitars and melodic, tightly structured choruses.
