Bonnie "Prince" Billy is the best-known alias of Will Oldham, a songwriter from Louisville, Kentucky, who had previously recorded as Palace Brothers, Palace Music and Palace. He adopted the Bonnie "Prince" Billy name in the late 1990s, beginning with the album I See a Darkness.

The songs draw on Appalachian and country traditions, sung in a thin, unsteady voice and often arranged sparsely, though Oldham has also worked with larger bands, string arrangements and a long list of collaborators. He has recorded prolifically, including albums of covers and re-recordings of his own material, and worked as an actor before and during his music career.
