Ryan Davis & The Roadhouse Band
Louisville's shaggy-dog cosmic country — novelistic songs that sneak up and floor you, Silver Jews wit with a road band's looseness.
Ryan Davis grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, and now lives across the river in Jeffersonville, Indiana. Before working under the Roadhouse Band name he spent years fronting State Champion, a group that put out its final album in 2018, and ran the State Champion Records label throughout that period.
With The Roadhouse Band he writes long, digressive country-leaning songs that pile up detail, sardonic asides and shaggy imagery over loose, slow-building arrangements. The music leans on pedal steel, ragged group playing and Davis's talk-sung delivery, with individual songs often stretching well past conventional length.
His debut under the new name, Dancing on the Edge, arrived to positive reviews and set the template for the band's sprawling sound. A second album, New Threats from the Soul, followed in July 2025. Comparisons to the Silver Jews and other literate underground country writers follow from the wordiness and deadpan humour rather than direct imitation.
