Wilco formed in Chicago in 1994 out of the wreckage of Uncle Tupelo, with Jeff Tweedy as singer and songwriter. The band began in alt-country territory and gradually moved outward, absorbing pop craft, studio experimentation and noise into records that made them one of the defining American rock groups of their era. The 2002 album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, famously rejected by their label before being released elsewhere, remains the pivot point in that story.
The current lineup has been stable for years and includes guitarist Nels Cline, whose extended, abrasive solos sit against Tweedy's plainspoken songs, and multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone. Live, Wilco tend toward long sets drawn deep into the catalogue, moving between quiet folk arrangements and sustained instrumental stretches.
