Former boxer and biochemist turned country songwriter — grunge-shaded Americana about grief and Indiana, delivered with a scientist's precision and a fighter's heart.

Stephen Wilson Jr. grew up in Seymour, Indiana, raised by his father after his mother left through a series of abusive relationships. Introverted as a boy, he and his brother trained in competitive boxing, reaching Golden Gloves level, which he says helped him get over stage fright. Hearing Tim McGraw's "Don't Take the Girl" as a teenager pushed him toward writing songs of his own.

Before pursuing music full time, Wilson worked in the research and development lab at Mars, the food company, where he married and moved to the countryside to raise his stepson. He left after three years, taking a job in 2016 as a staff songwriter for Big Loud in Nashville, writing for other artists before releasing music under his own name.

His music sits between country and rock, a mix he has called "Death Cab for Country." He grew up on Willie Nelson but counts Nirvana among his biggest influences, and credits Soundgarden's Kim Thayil and Chris Cornell with teaching him guitar through their unusual tunings. His singing stays close-miked and conversational, often half-spoken, over arrangements that build from quiet acoustic passages into heavier, distorted sections.

He signed with BMG and released his first single, "Made for This," a duet with his wife, singer Leigh Nash, in 2021. His debut EP, bon aqua, came out in 2023, followed the same year by the album Son of Dad, written after his father's 2018 death; a deluxe edition with acoustic and live tracks appeared in 2025.

In 2025 he released Blankets, an EP of covers including songs by Nirvana, Temple of the Dog, the Postal Service and the Smashing Pumpkins. His 2026 single "Gary" became his first release to country radio, reaching the top 40 of the Billboard Country Airplay chart.
