Stephen Wilson Jr. grew up in Seymour, Indiana, and came to songwriting after time spent boxing and working in science before moving to Nashville, where he wrote for other artists before stepping out under his own name. His music sits between country and rock, with the distorted guitars and dynamics of 1990s alternative rock underneath narrative writing rooted in small-town Indiana, his father's death and working-class family life.

His singing is close-miked and conversational, often half-spoken, and his records tend to build from quiet acoustic passages into heavier arrangements. He has described the songs as coming out of grief, and much of his catalogue circles the same rural Midwestern landscape.
