Blue Highway formed in the mid-1990s and became one of bluegrass music's steadier institutions, holding the same core lineup for well over a decade at a time when personnel changes were the norm. Guitarist Tim Stafford is among the band's principal songwriters, and much of the group's identity rests on original material rather than standards — narrative songs, gospel numbers sung in close harmony, and instrumental features that serve the arrangement rather than dominate it. Dobro, mandolin, banjo and bass are all given room, but the band's reputation was built on the blend of voices and on a restrained, ensemble-first approach to traditional bluegrass form.
