Charles Wesley Godwin
West Virginia storyteller — Appalachian family history sung in a baritone that fills a hollow.
Charles Wesley Godwin grew up in a coal-mining family near Morgantown, West Virginia, and played college soccer before turning to music. He started learning guitar and songwriting while studying finance at West Virginia University, citing Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, John Prine, Chris Knight and Ryan Bingham as touchstones for his sound.
He self-released his debut album, Seneca, in 2019, then followed it with How the Mighty Fall in 2021, a record he described as turning outward to tell other people's stories rather than his own. He has built his audience largely through touring and word of mouth, backed by his band the Allegheny High.
Godwin toured with Zach Bryan and co-wrote Bryan's song "Jamie" for the 2022 EP Summertime Blues, and appeared that year on Huey Mack's "Carry Me Home." A 2023 live EP, Live from the Church, mixed covers of Chris Knight and Bryan with tracks from his own catalogue, and he contributed "Winter's Come and Gone" to the soundtrack of The Hunger Games: The Ballads of Songbirds & Snakes.
Signed to Big Loud, he released his third album, Family Ties, in September 2023, built around songs addressed to individual relatives: his father on "Miner Imperfections," his wife Samantha on "All Again," his son on "Gabriel," his daughter on "Dance in the Rain." The album also includes "10-38," written as a direct sequel to Bruce Springsteen's "State Trooper."
He released the EP Lonely Mountain Town in early 2025 and a version of Evan Honer's "Mr. Meyers" the previous fall. His deep baritone and arrangements sitting between country and folk-leaning Americana remain constant across the material, whether drawing on Appalachian family history or, as on Family Ties, West Virginia University's tradition of playing "Take Me Home, Country Roads" after wins.
