West Virginia's gilded-age songbird — old-time, calypso, and honky-tonk swirled into something timeless, delivered in vintage lace and total command.

Sierra Ferrell was born in Charleston, West Virginia, and after her parents divorced around age five, she lived with her mother in a trailer, spending much of her time outdoors. Despite the state's bluegrass heritage, she grew up mostly on her mother's cassette tapes of 1990s acts like 10,000 Maniacs and Tracy Chapman, learning guitar and singing Shania Twain covers at a local bar as a teenager.

As a teenager she joined 600 lbs of Sin!, a group that started as a Grateful Dead cover band before turning to blues and roots. She left in 2012 to ride freight trains, rejoined the following year, then departed again to pursue her own material, spending her early twenties hitchhiking, freighthopping and living out of a van while busking between Seattle and New Orleans.

She self-released two albums, Pretty Magic Spell in 2018 and Washington by the Sea in 2019, selling copies directly while busking, and posted covers and originals to a YouTube channel that helped her music spread; a fan-uploaded recording of her song "In Dreams" drew millions of views. Regular appearances at Nashville's American Legion Post 82 caught the ear of producer Gary Paczosa, leading to a three-album deal with Rounder Records in 2019.

Her singing is marked by a pronounced vibrato and a phrasing style closer to prewar country and jazz vocalists than to contemporary Nashville. On stage she is usually backed by fiddle, upright bass and guitar, and performs in vintage-styled dress.

Her Rounder debut, Long Time Coming, appeared in 2021 and reached number 15 on the country albums chart, drawing critical acclaim and featuring guests including Billy Strings and Sarah Jarosz. Its follow-up, Trail of Flowers, released in March 2024, won her four Grammy Awards and extended her audience well beyond traditional bluegrass and old-time listeners.
