Alison Krauss began recording as a teenager, having come up as a fiddle contest player in Illinois, and has led Union Station since the late 1980s. The band's long-running lineup has included Jerry Douglas on dobro, Ron Block on banjo and guitar, and Barry Bales on bass, with Dan Tyminski singing lead on many of the more traditional numbers.
Their sound is bluegrass played with unusual restraint — precise, quiet dynamics, and arrangements that leave space around Krauss's clear soprano. Alongside traditional material they have drawn heavily on contemporary songwriters, pushing the group toward country and folk. Krauss is among the most decorated artists in the genre, and her work on the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack brought the band a much wider audience.
