Wyatt Ellis is a mandolin player from Maryville, Tennessee, who took up the instrument as a child and grew up steeped in the Bill Monroe end of the bluegrass tradition. Much of his early learning came through direct contact with older players, including study with Monroe stylist Mike Compton, and that lineage is audible in his tone and phrasing: hard-driving but unshowy, with a preference for melody over speed.

His work leans heavily on instrumentals and fiddle-tune repertoire, played straight rather than reinvented, and he has recorded alongside a number of established figures in the bluegrass and country world. Ellis has become one of the more visible younger players in traditional bluegrass, and his sets tend to reflect the same interests as his recordings — old tunes, close attention to timing, and space left for the rest of the band.
