Instrumental flatpicking pushed into jazz and surf territory by a trio with no singer to slow it down — acoustic velocity with a wink.

The Jon Stickley Trio formed in Asheville, North Carolina, around guitarist Jon Stickley, a flatpicker whose playing comes out of bluegrass but takes in jazz phrasing, surf-rock tones and elements of hip-hop rhythm. The group performs without a vocalist, building its sets from original instrumentals along with occasional reworked covers.

The lineup pairs Stickley's guitar with violin and drums, an unusual configuration for acoustic string music that gives the trio a percussive drive closer to a rock band than a traditional bluegrass ensemble. Violinist Lyndsay Pruett has been a longtime member.
