Wednesday

1 upcoming festival

Asheville's country-gaze storytellers — lap steel, feedback, and busted-truck poetry, narrating the South's weird corners in high fidelity.

Wednesday is a band from Asheville, North Carolina, led by singer and songwriter Karly Hartzman, who started the project around 2017. The group pairs the volume and smeared guitar textures of shoegaze with lap steel, country phrasing and detailed, place-specific storytelling, a combination often described as country-gaze. MJ Lenderman played guitar in the band for several years alongside his own solo work.

Hartzman's lyrics tend toward small, concrete detail — brand names, roadside scenes, overheard misfortune — delivered in a plainspoken drawl over arrangements that swing between quiet and overwhelming. The band released Twin Plagues in 2021 and Rat Saw God in 2023 on Dead Oceans, the latter bringing wider attention.
