Steep Canyon Rangers
North Carolina's Grammy-winning bluegrass institution — as at home backing Steve Martin as headlining on their own.
Steep Canyon Rangers formed in 2000, coming together while their members were students in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and later basing themselves in Asheville. They play bluegrass with a strong original-songwriting streak, using the traditional acoustic string-band instrumentation — guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle and bass — with close vocal harmony, while drawing on country, folk and pop writing.
The band became widely known through its long-running collaboration with Steve Martin, touring and recording with the banjo player and comedian, which brought bluegrass to audiences well outside the genre. They have also won a Grammy Award for their work, and continue to record and tour under their own name.
