The String Cheese Incident
Three nights as Hulaween's resident hosts — bluegrass roots stretched through funk, calypso, and full-blown electronica, costumes strongly encouraged.
The String Cheese Incident came together in 1993 among musicians playing ski towns like Crested Butte and Telluride, Colorado, initially calling themselves the Blue String Cheese Band because they saw themselves as a bluegrass outfit that also covered cheesy songs. In 1996 the founding members quit their day jobs and moved to Boulder to focus on the band full time, later bringing in Kyle Hollingsworth on keys to widen the sound beyond strings.
The band pressed its own releases through SCI Fidelity, the label they founded, starting with the studio debut 'Born on the Wrong Planet' and a live album taped at Boulder's Fox Theatre where songs stretched past seven minutes on average. Auxiliary percussionist Jason Hann joined the lineup in 2004, rounding out the rhythm section behind the group's long jams.
'Round the Wheel (1998) sharpened the songwriting and brought in guest players including saxophonist Paul McCandless and banjo player Tony Furtado, though wider recognition came only after years of relentless touring, with the band playing more than 500 shows between 1998 and 2001. 'Outside Inside' (2001), made with producer Steve Berlin of Los Lobos, pushed the sound toward straighter rock while still closing with the bluegrass-rooted 'Up the Canyon'.
