Sound Tribe's long-running fusion of live instrumentation and programmed electronics, built to unfold over an hour — jamtronica's founding congregation.

STS9, short for Sound Tribe Sector 9, formed in Georgia in the 1990s before relocating to the American West. The group pairs a conventional rock band setup — drums, bass, guitar, keyboards and percussion — with sequencing, samplers and electronic production, producing long instrumental pieces that move between downtempo, funk, house and breakbeat.

They are widely cited as one of the earliest bands to bridge the jam-band circuit and electronic dance music, a hybrid that came to be called livetronica. Their shows are built around extended improvisation and elaborate lighting design, and much of their catalogue is instrumental.
