O.A.R.

1 upcoming festival

Maryland's own — 'That Was a Crazy Game of Poker' a state holiday in these parts, roots-rock jam warmth built over decades.

O.A.R., short for Of a Revolution, formed in 1996 among high-school friends in Rockville, Maryland, and consolidated as a band while its members were students at Ohio State University in Columbus. The line-up has long centred on singer-guitarist Marc Roberge, with saxophone a distinctive part of the arrangement alongside guitar, bass and drums.

Their music mixes roots rock and reggae-inflected rhythms with the extended, improvisation-friendly structures of the jam scene, and the group built its following largely through relentless touring and tape-trading among college audiences rather than radio. Long-form live favourites remain central to their shows, and the band has continued releasing albums and headlining large venues for close to three decades.
