Four-part harmony institution — 'Girl Crush' and 'Boondocks' bookend two decades of country vocal-group craft.

Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman met at Samford University in 1987, singing together in the school's vocal ensembles. Fairchild later sang lead with the Christian group Truth and formed the duo KarenLeigh with fellow member Leigh Cappillino. Both women eventually moved to Nashville to pursue solo careers, reunited there, and in 1998 formed a vocal group with Jimi Westbrook and Phillip Sweet; Fairchild and Westbrook have been married since 2006.

The group's first deal, with Mercury Nashville, produced no singles or album before they were dropped. They signed with Monument Records in 2002 and released a self-titled debut that yielded two minor chart singles before that label folded, leaving the four members taking outside jobs while they kept touring.

In 2005 they signed with Equity Music Group, a label owned by Clint Black, and released The Road to Here, which went platinum and included the breakout single 'Boondocks.' A third album, A Place to Land, came out on Equity and was reissued through Capitol Nashville after Equity closed in 2008.

Seven more albums followed for Capitol, including Tornado, The Breaker and Mr. Sun, four of which reached number one on the Top Country Albums chart. Across their catalogue the group has placed 24 singles on the country charts, among them the number-one hits 'Pontoon' and 'Better Man' and top-ten songs including 'Bring It On Home,' 'Little White Church,' 'Tornado' and 'Day Drinking,' alongside 'Boondocks' and 'Girl Crush.'
