Wynonna Judd
One of country's great voices — half of The Judds, then three decades of solo records that let her sing even louder.
Wynonna Judd was born in Ashland, Kentucky, and came to prominence in the 1980s singing lead alongside her mother Naomi in The Judds, a duo built on close family harmony and a stripped-back, acoustic-leaning take on mainstream country. When the partnership ended in 1991 because of Naomi's illness, Wynonna began recording under her own name, opening with a self-titled album in 1992 that produced hits including "She Is His Only Need" and "No One Else on Earth."
Her voice is the centre of the work: a heavy, low contralto with a pronounced blues and gospel pull, which has let her move between country, rock and soul material without much strain. She continued to perform Judds songs after Naomi's death in 2022. She is the sister of the actor Ashley Judd.
