Cat Power is the recording name of Chan Marshall, a singer and songwriter who emerged from the Atlanta underground in the early 1990s before relocating to New York. Her early records paired sparse guitar and piano with a low, unhurried voice, and her writing has moved between stark minimalism and fuller, soul-inflected arrangements recorded in the American South.
Marshall is also known as an interpreter, having released several albums built largely around covers, and she has performed Bob Dylan's 1966 Royal Albert Hall set in full. Her live shows have long had a reputation for unpredictability, and her catalogue spans indie folk, blues and art pop without settling in any one of them.
