Mogwai formed in Glasgow in 1995 and became one of the defining bands of instrumental post-rock, building tracks from quiet, repeated guitar figures into extended passages of distortion and volume. Their catalogue has expanded well beyond that template, taking in synthesizers, electronics and occasional vocals, often heavily processed.
Alongside their studio albums the band has written a considerable amount of music for film and television, including scores for documentary and drama projects. They run their own label, Rock Action Records. Live, they are known for playing at genuinely punishing volume.
