Franz Ferdinand
Glasgow's art-school dance-punks — 'Take Me Out' still detonates a field two decades on, and the deep cuts still make people dance.
Franz Ferdinand formed in Glasgow in 2002, brought together by Alex Kapranos, Bob Hardy, Nick McCarthy and Paul Thomson, several of whom had already played in earlier local bands. The group grew out of the city's art-school and DIY scene, with Kapranos and Thomson forming a songwriting partnership and McCarthy joining after returning from studying jazz bass in Germany.
The sound was angular and clipped, built on interlocking guitars and a stated aim of making music people could dance to. Their debut single, "Darts of Pleasure", stalled just outside the UK top 40, but its follow-up, "Take Me Out", reached number three, earned a Grammy nomination, and became the band's signature song. Their self-titled debut album won the 2004 Mercury Prize.
Later records pushed further into electronic production and disco rhythm without losing the wry, observational lyrics. You Could Have It So Much Better and Tonight: Franz Ferdinand extended the group's chart run, and in 2015 Kapranos and the band formed the supergroup FFS with the American band Sparks, releasing one joint album.
Kapranos has remained the only constant through repeated changes in the lineup. McCarthy left in 2016 and was replaced by Julian Corrie and Dino Bardot; Paul Thomson departed in 2021, with Audrey Tait taking over on drums. The band's sixth studio album, The Human Fear, arrived in January 2025 to strong commercial reception.
