Franz Ferdinand
Glasgow's art-school dance-punks — 'Take Me Out' still detonates a field two decades on, and the deep cuts still make people dance.
Franz Ferdinand formed in Glasgow in 2002 around Alex Kapranos, and emerged from the city's art-school and DIY scene with a sound built on angular guitar lines, clipped rhythms and a stated intention to make music that people could dance to. Their debut album and its single "Take Me Out" made them one of the central bands of the era's guitar-pop revival.
Subsequent records have pushed further toward electronic production and disco rhythms while keeping the wry, observational lyrics and tight arrangements. Kapranos has remained the constant member through several lineup changes, and the band continues to tour and record.
