The Mael brothers' 50-year art-pop conspiracy — wittier than everyone, still ahead, and finally getting the flowers.

Sparks is the duo of brothers Ron and Russell Mael, who grew up in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles, and attended UCLA, where Ron studied cinema and graphic art and Russell studied theatre and filmmaking. They began as Halfnelson before working under the name Sparks from 1972 onward, with Russell singing in a high, theatrical register and Ron writing and playing keyboards, deadpan and largely still on stage.

Kimono My House and its single 'This Town Ain't Big Enough for Both of Us' reached No. 2 on the UK singles chart in 1974 and established the pair in Britain. They kept reinventing the project afterward: the 1979 Giorgio Moroder collaboration No. 1 in Heaven produced the disco hits 'The Number One Song in Heaven' and 'Beat the Clock' and pointed toward synth-pop, followed by further chart entries including 'When I'm with You', 'I Predict' and 'Cool Places', made with the Go-Go's Jane Wiedlin.

2002's Lil' Beethoven, which the duo called their genre-defining opus, fused repetitive song structures with orchestral arrangement and brought a wave of renewed critical attention. Later albums Hippopotamus and A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip both entered the UK Top 10, and 2025's Mad! reached No. 2, the highest UK chart position of the band's career.

Beyond their own catalogue, Sparks recorded a full album with Franz Ferdinand as the supergroup FFS in 2015, and in 2021 Ron and Russell wrote all the songs for Leos Carax's musical film Annette, winning a César Award for the score. That same year, Edgar Wright's documentary The Sparks Brothers traced the band's history and brought their catalogue to a wider audience.
