Scotland's beloved kitchen-sink psychedelicists, reunited — 'Dry the Rain' at last, and the High Fidelity scene made flesh.

The Beta Band began in 1996 when Steve Mason and Gordon Anderson, both working out of St Andrews, started writing together, planning to call the group the Pigeons before settling on their eventual name. Robin Jones, John Maclean and bassist Steve Duffield joined for the debut EP; Anderson left soon after due to illness, later recording as Lone Pigeon, and Richard Greentree took over on bass.

Working out of Scotland, the band combined folk melody, loose hip-hop rhythms, sampling, drone and studio collage, a mixture often filed under folktronica and neo-psychedelia. Members of both Radiohead and Oasis praised the group early on, and Radiohead invited them to open a run of shows in 2001.

Their early EPs, later gathered on The Three E.P.'s, drew wide critical praise and a place in Pitchfork's albums of the year. "Dry the Rain" remains the best-known song from that run, helped by its use in the film adaptation of Nick Hornby's High Fidelity. Their debut album proper, released in 1999, took a looser, more diffuse approach that divided listeners, with Mason himself dismissing it as "fucking awful."

The band was known for a wry, self-deprecating relationship with its own records, and for live shows that leaned on percussion, loops and layered vocals.

The Beta Band split in 2004 amid financial difficulties. Jones and Maclean went on to form the Aliens with Gordon Anderson, while Mason pursued solo work and recorded as King Biscuit Time. The band reformed in 2025 to tour Britain and the United States.
