Bay Area beatdown that turned meme-level swagger into a genuinely feared live act — the joke stopped being a joke fast.

Sunami started in San Jose, California in 2019, put together by musicians who had already played in other Bay Area hardcore bands including Gulch, Hands of God, Drain, Spinebreaker and Lead Dream. The idea began as a parody of what the members saw as the willfully dumb side of beatdown hardcore, meant to last only a demo and a handful of shows.

That plan fell apart after their live debut at a small San Jose community center, where a room built for seventy people was overwhelmed by twice that many and the set left several people bleeding within eight minutes. Footage spread online fast, and offers to play larger hardcore festivals followed almost immediately, though the pandemic delayed any real touring.

Sunami's songs stay short and riff-driven, built around breakdowns and shouted vocals with a metalcore weight in the guitar tone, and the band kept its blunt, half-joking image even as the momentum turned real. A split with Gulch and a self-titled EP came out in 2021, followed by an unofficial outdoor show in San Jose that pulled a couple thousand people into a disused parking lot.

A self-titled full-length arrived in June 2023, after a run of EPs and splits, and that same year the band played its first headline tour, a full run of North American dates that confirmed the following built by its earlier live reputation.
