The godfather, shirtless as ever — punk exists because of this man, and the Stooges songbook still hits like a dare.

Iggy Pop, born James Osterberg in Michigan, fronted the Stooges from the late 1960s, a band whose first three albums — The Stooges, Fun House and Raw Power — are treated as foundational to punk. His stage presence, frequently shirtless and confrontational, became as widely cited as the records themselves.

His solo career began with The Idiot and Lust for Life, both made in Berlin with David Bowie, and produced songs including "Lust for Life," "The Passenger" and "China Girl." He has continued recording steadily across decades, working with collaborators from Josh Homme to jazz and electronic musicians, and reunited with the Stooges in the 2000s. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the Stooges in 2010.
