Guttermouth formed in Huntington Beach, California in 1988, part of the Orange County punk scene that produced a wave of fast, melodic bands in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Fronted throughout by vocalist Mark Adkins, the group pairs skate-punk tempos and clean, hook-driven guitar with lyrics built on sarcasm, crude humour and deliberate offence.
The band recorded for Nitro Records, home to several California punk acts of the era, before later releases elsewhere. Guttermouth's live shows are known as much for Adkins' between-song heckling as for the songs themselves, and the band's willingness to antagonise audiences has occasionally cost it slots on tours.
