The Bronx's punk band in full mariachi regalia — a bit that became a genuinely accomplished second career, now several albums deep.

Mariachi El Bronx is the mariachi project of the Los Angeles hardcore punk band The Bronx, begun in 2006 when the group needed an acoustic arrangement for a television appearance and chose to write mariachi songs rather than strip down their own. The idea stuck: the same musicians, fronted by singer Matt Caughthran, learned the instrumentation — guitarrón, vihuela, trumpet, violin — commissioned traditional charro suits, and have since released several albums under the name. The songwriting keeps a pop and punk sensibility while taking the form seriously, and the band alternates between its two identities on tour.
