Metalcore that kept getting darker and more atmospheric long after their scene peers stopped trying — the rare legacy act still improving.

The Devil Wears Prada formed in Dayton, Ohio, in 2005, and took shape around vocalist Mike Hranica and guitarist Jeremy DePoyster. The band emerged from the mid-2000s metalcore wave, pairing screamed vocals and breakdowns with clean choruses and prominent keyboards, and was widely identified with Christian metalcore early on. Over subsequent records their sound moved toward heavier, slower and more atmospheric writing, with a greater emphasis on texture and mood than on the genre's usual dynamics. Hranica's lyrics have grown correspondingly bleaker and more abstract. They also released a series of concept EPs alongside their full-length albums.
