Progressive metal with no regard for song length — polka breaks, jazz detours, and genuine death-metal fury, often inside the same eleven-minute track.

Between the Buried and Me formed in North Carolina in 2000 and have spent their career pushing progressive metal into unusually wide territory. Their music combines death metal growls and metalcore riffing with extended instrumental passages, jazz and fusion interludes, clean vocal sections and abrupt stylistic swerves, often across tracks that run well past ten minutes. Vocalist and keyboardist Tommy Rogers and guitarist Paul Waggoner have anchored the band throughout.

Albums such as Colors are widely cited as reference points for the modern progressive metal scene, and the band has periodically performed full records live from start to finish.
