Kooley High formed in 2006 among students in Raleigh, North Carolina, and has operated as a full crew rather than a solo act with backup: multiple MCs trading verses over beats built in-house by the group's own producers, with a DJ rounding out the live show. Rapsody was part of the group early on, before her solo career took off.
The sound leans on live-feeling drums and soul and jazz samples, closer to the traditions of 1990s East Coast rap than to anything trend-driven, and the writing tends toward conversational storytelling and posse-cut back-and-forth. Kooley High has stayed rooted in the Triangle area's rap community across its run, releasing independently and playing regularly around North Carolina.
