Corrosion of Conformity formed in Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1982, starting out as a fast hardcore punk band before becoming one of the groups most associated with the crossover between punk and thrash metal. Over the following decade the tempos slowed and the riffs thickened, and by the 1990s the band had settled into a heavy, blues-inflected Southern metal style with Pepper Keenan on vocals and guitar.

Founding members Woody Weatherman and Mike Dean have anchored the group through numerous line-up changes and periods of inactivity, including a stretch in which the band worked as a trio with Dean singing. Their catalogue spans hardcore-era records, the crossover material, and the stoner-leaning albums that remain their best known.
