Cancer Bats formed in Toronto in 2004 around vocalist Liam Cormier, and have spent two decades welding hardcore punk to Southern rock and sludge metal riffing. Records including Hail Destroyer and Searching for Zero set out the approach: mid-paced grooves and stoner-metal guitar tone carrying Cormier's shouted vocals, with hardcore tempos and breakdowns arriving when needed. The band also performs as Bat Sabbath, a Black Sabbath covers alter ego that has become a regular part of their touring life and makes the group's influences explicit.
