Misanthropic eco-horror deathgrind, with Travis Ryan's clean-shriek hybrid doing something no other vocalist quite manages — apocalyptic themes played at extinction speed.

Cattle Decapitation formed in San Diego in 1996, founded by Scott Miller, Gabe Serbian and Dave Astor, and put out a demo titled Ten Torments of the Damned that same year. Miller left within a year and Travis Ryan took over on vocals. Guitarist Josh Elmore joined in 2001; he and Ryan are the only members to appear on all eight studio albums.

Vocalist Travis Ryan is known for alternating between low growls, high shrieks and a strained clean-sung register, a mix that has grown steadily more technical and melodic across the band's career and become one of the group's identifying features.

Their lyrics deal consistently with environmental collapse, animal cruelty and human self-destruction, often inverting the relationship between people and livestock, a theme that has run through the band's work since its earliest releases.

The band has recorded for Metal Blade Records since the mid-2000s. Their 2002 debut, To Serve Man, was refused distribution in Germany over its cover art, and 2004's Humanure faced similar censorship over its artwork. Later records, including Monolith of Inhumanity (2012), The Anthropocene Extinction (2015) and Death Atlas (2019), are generally regarded as among the more ambitious releases in extreme metal.

The current lineup adds rhythm guitarist Belisario Dimuzio, bassist Diego Soria and drummer Dave McGraw alongside Ryan and Elmore. Cattle Decapitation has toured with acts including Suffocation, Cryptopsy, The Black Dahlia Murder, Deicide, Behemoth, Hate Eternal, Krisiun, Revocation and Job for a Cowboy.
