Cattle Decapitation formed in San Diego in 1996 and play a form of deathgrind that has grown steadily more technical and melodic across their career. Vocalist Travis Ryan is known for alternating between low growls, high shrieks and a strained clean-sung register that has become one of the band's identifying features.
Their lyrics deal consistently with environmental collapse, animal cruelty and human self-destruction, often inverting the relationship between people and livestock. The band has recorded for Metal Blade Records since the mid-2000s, and their later albums are generally regarded as among the more ambitious records in extreme metal.
