Prayers is a San Diego project centred on vocalist Rafael Reyes, known as Leafar Seyer, who coined the term "cholo goth" to describe the music. The sound draws on darkwave and synth-driven post-punk, with cold electronic production underneath lyrics rooted in Chicano and barrio life in Southern California, including Reyes's own background.
The pairing of gothic and industrial-leaning music with that imagery gave the project a distinct identity, and Prayers has released steadily since forming in 2013.
